Images of Planets in our solar system

Jupiter

Various images of Jupiter taken at different times of the year and with different camera settings depending on conditions.

saturn

Various pictures of Saturn taken over many years. Right now (late 2025) the rings are edge on and have disappeared from view (centre image). This is due to our position in relation to the plane of the rings it happens every 12-15 years. They haven't gone! I don't expect them to make a return until later in 2026.

Mars

Several pictures of Mars in 2025 while at a far point in its orbit. Small image is the size you see in the eyepiece! I have more magnification in the other images.

Uranus

Image of Uranus (about 1.5 Billion Miles away) taken on my Celestron 200mm SCT on night of 28th February 2025. This is first time I’ve ever successfully imaged it! Its a tough target in UK skies, you can’t see it by eye from my back garden so getting it in the camera view was an achievement for me! Sky was clear but the imaging conditions (as usual) make the image blurry. You will need to zoom in to see the colour but no detail as the planet is covered in cloud.

Venus

Image of Venus (about 25 Million miles away at its nearest to 160 Million miles at its furthest) taken on my Celestron 200mm SCT on night of 19th Dec. It is the second planet from the sun (after Mercury) and is similar in size to Earth. Being closer to the Sun it’s rare to get a good shot of it. It has a thick atmosphere that traps heat with a surface temperature hot enough to melt lead. The clouds also reflect most of the light from the Sun. This is only the second time I’ve ever imaged it, often too dangerous to image planets near the sun with a telescope!
